A 2009 study performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute, tested 30 water heaters over a 90 day period and found that a gas water heater maintained the original factory efficiency rating over a 15 year lifetime when a water softener was used. Hard water lead to as much as a 24% loss of efficiency in water heaters. As little as 5 grains of water hardness causes a 4% loss in efficiency and a 4% increase in cost for gas.
